Get your Hands Dirty

This page will chart the progress of our first garden. Come with us on our first garden adventure!

August 20, 2011

Well, our garden is pretty much gone! Through the winds and rain of the weekend it just did not make it.  Oh well, we've learned quite a bit for next year.  :)

Last week we had a HUGE answer to prayer! We've been looking for firewood to burn this year. Mostly looking on craigslist and when we are driving around, but it's just been so expensive~

Last Tuesday, a local tree-cutting company started cutting down 15 feet of trees on our road. When I saw that they were just leaving them there I asked the supervisor what they planned to do with them. He said NOTHING! It's first come, first served!  He kinda laughed when I got so excited, but he has no idea that we've been praying for wood! Now, there is NO way that this is a coincidence... we've been searching the entire state of Maine for reasonably priced wood and the Lord provided free wood right on our road!

Chad hauled about 3 1/2 cord last Friday and plans to haul a little more this weekend and maybe start cutting and stacking. What a blessing!

Mini-Harvest

We harvested our carrots last Thursday and grilled them for supper. So YUMMY!  I learned that the ground was too rocky for them to go very deep, thus the stubby carrots...

We also lost a squash plant (Opie's leash got tangled up). The other squash plant is doing nicely and we have 3 pepper plants also thriving. I also planted 4 (5 gallon) buckets of tomato plants at the end of June. A little late, but they are growing pretty well.  We have come to the conclusion that we don't get enough sun to get a good-producing garden, though we will still plant every year because we enjoy it!

Well, my garden isn't doing so well.  With so much rain the week they were planted, most of them didn't make it. I do have several carrot plants, 4-5 pepper plants, 2 squash and maybe a couple onion plants. There were 5 cantelope plants that seemed to be doing well, but they were all dead when I got back from vacation. A bad storm came through during those two weeks and probably did them in.

BUT... I did plant a teeny-tiny flower bed by the porch. It's doing pretty well! Thankfully. I'm not too discouraged about my garden because I didn't expect it to do well since it's my first time to plant anything!  I am going to plant some tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets today. (Yes, I know it's a little on the late side!) Hopefully those will do well because I want to make LOTS of salsa!!

She wanted in on the picture.  :)

Small, but just right for starting out.

My pitiful garden!

May 26, 2011

The garden is planted!!  It has been SO rainy and cloudy the past couple of weeks so my poor little plants are not doing so good. Yes, I am blaming it on the weather and not my lack of gardening skills. Chad built a raised bed and some good folks from our church let us haul dirt from their place. FYI, if you ever want a great workout... go dig some dirt. WHEW!

Here is the experimental garden... I do plan to plant some tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets but it probably won't happen until after we get back from Texas.

April 27, 2011

Chad had Monday and Tuesday off so we spent a lot of time outside... well, not on Tuesday because it was raining. :)

Monday was BEAUTIFUL and the kids played outside ALL day!  Chad built a little deck down by the water for us to put chairs on and enjoy the lake!

The only piece of ice left on the lake is right in front of our house! It's so encouraging to hear the loons though, and soon we'll be putting the kayaks in the water. "Yay" for Spring!!

I planted my hydrangea and seedum (finally!). Trent decided to help... he's such a little boy!!

My seedlings are sprouting!! I haven't killed them yet, but we're still a LONG way from getting vegetables.  It's so encouraging to see some progress!

We also went for a little walk so Chad could see if any of the fallen trees would be good for firewood. When he lifted up one log he found this "little" guy. He said it's the biggest salamander he's ever seen in Maine!

Tuesday was quite rainy, so we took a trip to Bangor for a few necessities that can't be found in the big city of Lincoln. While we were in the area we popped over to Corinth were Chad had seen a sign for chicks. Nana and Papa had sent the kids some money for Easter treats so we ended up getting 10 baby chicks!  3 leghorns, 2 silkies, 3 jersey giants, 2 Americanas (or maybe 1 Americana and 1 of something else). The Americanas will lay green and blue eggs!!

This little guy is an Americana... he is so little and cute, but he is the loudest of them all!

So... my husband's wonderful Aunt Pam sent me a hydrangea seedling and a seedum to plant. YAY!  Grace (Chad's cousin) is up for the week and she is answering all my gardening questions! Yesterday we planted squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, carrots, peppers, and onions in a seedling tray.  So much fun!!

Since this is our first year, we are not going to invest too much moolah. This is just a basic tray from Wally World and it seems to work fine... so far.
